After qualifying as a chartered accountant, Marie joined Arthur Andersen’s tax division in Dublin, then established a specialised tax consultancy practice in 1988 and formed Barr Pomeroy with Michael Pomeroy in 1989. She was a Council member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland from 1998 to 2005, was appointed to CCAB – I Taxation Committee in 1992 and was chairman from 1999 to 2008. She was a member of the Tax Administration Liaison Committee (“TALC”) from 1999 to 2008, serving as chairman in 2003 and 2007. She is one of five “people of standing” appointed by the Minister for Finance under the EU Arbitration Convention. She served as director of Intercontinental Grouping of Accountants and Lawyers (“IGAL”), to which Barr Pomeroy belonged, from 2012 until 2018.
Marie has lectured extensively for the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland and other professional bodies on taxation matters and has written various articles for Accountancy Ireland.
As part of her tax consultancy work Marie has been advising on EIIS and its predecessor BES since the latter was first introduced in 1984.
